Abstract

This study investigates the effects of parental incarceration on child development, focusing on the emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes for affected children. With millions of children in the United States experiencing parental incarceration, understanding the long-term implications is crucial for developing effective interventions. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines quantitative data from large-scale surveys with qualitative interviews from children and caregivers. Findings reveal that parental incarceration is associated with increased levels of anxiety, depression, and behavioral problems among children. Additionally, these children often face educational challenges, including reduced academic performance and higher dropout rates. The study identifies key factors that mediate these effects, such as the quality of parent-child relationships, socioeconomic status, and access to support systems. Furthermore, the research highlights the role of stigma and social isolation in exacerbating negative outcomes. Recommendations include implementing community-based support programs and policies aimed at maintaining family connections during incarceration. By addressing the unique needs of children with incarcerated parents, this study aims to inform practitioners and policymakers on strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of parental incarceration, ultimately promoting healthier developmental trajectories for these vulnerable children.
